Deion Sanders, the man we know as “Coach Prime”, has always been a larger-than-life figure. From NFL stardom to baseball diamonds, from high-stepping into end zones to swaggering through college sidelines—Sanders has lived life in the spotlight. But in 2025, he quietly faced the biggest challenge of his life: bladder cancer.
In a heartfelt press conference on July 28, Coach Prime revealed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer earlier this year. He described the terrifying moment he had to write a will, unsure if he would survive. Yet true to form, Deion didn’t fold—he fought back.
Undergoing a radical bladder removal surgery, doctors reconstructed a new bladder using part of his small intestine. It was a painful, humbling journey that left him 25 pounds lighter, dealing with side effects, and still managing to coach his Colorado Buffaloes team with pride and purpose.
Now officially cancer-free, Sanders is using his story to urge men—especially Black men—to get screened early and often. “I was blessed they caught it in time,” he said. “But most men don’t find out until it’s too late.”
Despite his health battle, Sanders never stopped inspiring. He continues to coach. He shows up for his sons Shedeur and Shilo—both making moves in the football world. And through it all, he does what he’s always done best: lead by example.
Coach Prime’s journey is a reminder that even the strongest among us face hidden battles. But with faith, fight, and purpose, even cancer had to take a backseat to greatness.
